It’s definitely not a reflection of the game’s overall pace, but it’s not bad either. I agree with those who suggest that new players should push through it because you really don’t get to experience the full depth of what Red Dead Redemption 2 offers until you’re let loose in its massive open world.
That being said, it’s not a section I look forward to revisiting on repeat playthroughs. I always just want to get to the good stuff. However, that might change on my next run, especially after discovering something new in the prologue that I definitely hadn’t seen before.

It turns out this frozen character could be a reference to the 1972 western movie Jeremiah Johnson. In the film, the main character stumbles upon the frozen body of a man named Hatchet Jack, who’s holding a .50-caliber Hawken rifle in the Rocky Mountains.
If this is indeed what Rockstar is referencing, it’s a cool little nod to a classic western film that shows just how deep their love for the genre runs.
One player, Requiesce_en_pace, responded, “I’m replaying the game again and it’s amazing how much hidden stuff is scattered in the snow and across the map.”
Another player, LuckyHare87, added, “Wait until you find the ancient frozen settler.” This can be found at the highest point of Mount Hagen, so keep an eye out!
