Despite being one of the most critically acclaimed games of its generation, Red Dead Redemption 2 still hasn't received a dedicated next-gen upgrade for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. The game remains fully playable on current consoles through backward compatibility, but it’s locked at 30 frames per second on PS5 and lacks the enhanced visuals available on Microsoft’s platform.

Fans have been wondering why Rockstar hasn't prioritized updating such a major title. Over the past few years, multiple reports have hinted that a PS5 version of RDR2 was in development, but those plans were reportedly shelved to focus on Grand Theft Auto VI. Insider Tez2 previously claimed Rockstar had dropped both a remaster of the original Red Dead Redemption and an enhanced edition of the sequel.

While a PS4 port of the first game did eventually release in 2023, it was a minimal update more of a straight reissue than a remaster. It bumped up the resolution but stuck with a 30fps cap until a post-launch patch finally introduced 60fps support on PS5. Still, that fell short of what many would expect from a true next-gen version.

Now, new developments suggest things may be changing. According to sources close to Rockstar, a full-fledged next-gen patch for Red Dead Redemption 2 is still in the cards. These insiders say that the update is just as real as the long-rumored port, and could be part of Rockstar's release roadmap for the newer consoles.

Adding to the intrigue, industry chatter has resurfaced around a potential launch of RDR2 on Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2. During the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII, Split Fiction, and Elden Ring were all confirmed. However, Red Dead Redemption 2 was notably absent despite whispers it was meant to be among the highlights.

Yet according to reports from Gamereactor and corroborated by Nintendúo, Rockstar is actively working on bringing RDR2 to Switch 2, possibly by the end of this year. And this wouldn’t be a one-off port: sources indicate the Switch 2 version may launch alongside or shortly after a broader update that would bring the game up to modern performance standards on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Of course, nothing is set in stone. The gaming industry remains volatile, with shifting release windows and unpredictable delays. Even Rockstar has been readjusting its timeline, recently pushing GTA VI to the next fiscal year. But if the rumors are true, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is indeed headed for Switch 2 and receiving a long-overdue next-gen facelift, then 2025 could finally be the year this modern classic gets the treatment it deserves
